Lasse Nielsen | Humean Bundle Theory Meets Narrative Identity
27. 4. 2016 | 13:15 - 14:45
Hume brings forth a theory of personal identity, which allows us to move away from the traditional view of identity as something persisting through time. Accepting bundle theory will make us able to treat personal identity as a socially engineered term, which in turn clears the way for a narrative approach to identity. With the notion of a persisting “self” gone, a narrative identity can more adequately account for our day to day use of personal identity. Bundle theory serves to show us what we can know about personal identity, and narrative identity fills in the blanks about how we operate with an illusionary sense of self, in order to assign moral judgement to ourselves and others, despite the fact that sameness over time, according to bundle theory, is non-existent. With the merging of bundle theory and narrative identity, we will be able to offer a much more realistic and practical theory of personal identity.
